The History of Kickboxing

Monday, January 12th, 2009

Kickboxing has a very interesting and complicated history, starting with Thai Boxing, which is also known as ‘Muay Thai’ is still extremely popular in Thailand and is a national sport of Thai society. Since the Sukhothai period, between 1257 – 1377 AD, Thai boxing has continuously been in competition. Soldiers have trained and used the techniques for as long as there has been an army in Thailand. Thai childhood involves watching, learning and copying it.

Kick boxing is a martial art created to defeat Muay Thai, by the Japanese boxing promoter: Osamu Noguchi, in 1950. Osamu Noguchi wanted to introduce to the Japanese people what he had seen in Thailand, so he sent some Thai boxers to Japan and founded the Japan Kickboxing Association. He named the new martial art “kick-boxing” and the rest is history as they say.

Kick boxing is said to be a mixture of karate and thai boxing. Participants are authorized to hit each other with fists and feet, but only above the hip. Utilising elbows or knees is forbidden and the use of the shins is seldom allowed; grappling is also not a technique used.

Kickboxing has come a long way since it’s conception all them years ago and lessons have been learnt from the history of kickboxing and is now enjoyed by thousands of people across the globe. It is particularly popular in Asia and Europe. Historically speaking Kickboxing is one of the oldest forms of martial ars that is still widely practised in modern society.
